Rain observations with a vertically looking Micro Rain Radar (MRR)
Measurements of rain were obtained with a vertically pointing micro radar (MRR) with 1 min time resolution and 50(100) m height resolution at the German Baltic coast on the Zingst peninsula (54.43°N, 12.67°E). The comparison with a conventional rain gauge (30 min integration time) for a fi ve months summer period show a correlation coeffi cient of r = 0.87 for the rainrate and agreement within ...
متن کاملImproved Micro Rain Radar snow measurements using Doppler spectra post-processing
The Micro Rain Radar 2 (MRR) is a compact Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) system that operates at 24 GHz. The MRR is a low-cost, portable radar system that requires minimum supervision in the field. As such, the MRR is a frequently used radar system for conducting precipitation research. Current MRR drawbacks are the lack of a sophisticated post-processing algorithm to improve its se...
متن کاملVertically pointing airborne Doppler radar observations of Kelvin-Helmholtz billows
A train of Kelvin–Helmholtz billows in a deep stratiform cloud over a mountain range is documented using data from a high-resolution vertically pointing airborne Doppler radar. The billows had a spacing of 2–2.5 km and a small aspect ratio. The formation and decay of the billows appear to be related to flow acceleration over a mountain.
متن کاملImproved Micro Rain Radar Rainfall Measurements using Doppler Spectra Post-Processing
The Micro Rain Radar 2 (MRR) is a cost effective, minimum maintenance oriented, portable radar system used for conducting precipitation research. This system is prone to several draw backs such as lack of a sophisticated post-processing algorithm to improve its sensitivity, noise due to radar receiver and the lack of high quality Doppler radar moments. In this project work, we propose an improv...
متن کامل8.1 Development of a Climatology of Vertically Complete Wind Profiles from Doppler Radar Wind Profiler Systems
Space vehicle loads and trajectory assessments utilize archives of both discrete and sequential wind profiles to ensure robust structural integrity during vehicle design. Historically, vehicle programs have used balloonbased measurements, which have three primary limitations inherent to balloon systems. First, the high cost of balloon releases makes high-frequency balloon sampling impractical, ...
